Though the horrific human rights abuses, massive online, financial fraud, slavery and resume robbery racket on the reviewer since 2010, has made the reviewer famous worldwide, the reviewer continues to lead a very spartan and disciplined life.
So the book “Love in the time of affluenza” is an interesting book on the life of upper class and rich people in mumbai. the main protagonist of the book, Natasha comes from a family of diplomats, worked as a journalist, is married to a prince and has three children. While visiting a supermarket in the morning, she is shocked to spot her married friend trisha with a man in a checked shirt who is not her husband. They appear to be very friendly
Trisha is married to Nakul, who is a business partner of Natasha’s husband varun running an architectural firm. When questioned Trisha admits that she is having an affair with Guneet, her boyfriend from vasant kunj in delhi.He is an exporter and met trisha in an Istanbul coffee ship. Though she has twin children, Trisha claims that the marriage was over in two years, she does not enjoy spending time with Nakul.
Trisha requests natasha not to reveal the details of her affair to her husband Nakul, though she is meeting Guneet regularly in Mumbai. Though natasha feels guilty she agrees to help her friend trisha to maintain the relationship. When natasha goes to meet her lover Guneet, she lies to her husband and family members that she is going to meet her friend natasha
When Trisha and natasha are questioned by their spouses on why they are spending so much time together, they claim that they are planning a birthday party for varun. A grand birthday party is organized, where trisha, natasha, their parents, mother in laws, relatives and friends are invited and come to the party. Though natasha does not want guneet to come to the party, trisha is infatuated with him and he comes to the party.
The party is in full swing, when natasha is called by her husband to the study. There she finds her mother in law and nakul’s mother Bela. Natasha’s mother in law had forgotten her mobile phone in the study,so she had left the party and gone to the study to retrieve the mobile phone. When she was there, trisha and guneet entered the room and starting kissing each other passionately, which natasha’s mother in law recorded on her phone as proof, so that people would not question her account of the affair.
When natasha is questioned she initially denies knowing guneet but her husband observing her closely notices her interaction with guneet and realizes that she lying to him. The stress of the lies being exposed, makes natasha faint at the party. Her husband is furious that he was lied to. The affair shocks people in the social circles and Trisha who is from delhi leaves her husband Nakul and his posh house, to move into a small flat with her lover guneet.
How hiding the affair affects the relationship, her career and other details form the rest of the book. It has an entertaining account of high class society, families who have their own house, garden, maidservants, cooks and drivers. In the indian internet sector, well-paid top government employees are ruthless in cheating, exploiting and robbing hardworking risk taking domain investors, to make their lazy greedy girlfriends and sugar babies, rich and powerful, getting them government jobs faking online income, domain ownership.
Also when younger some women like trisha leave their rich husband and comfortable life to be with the person who they love.
