While there are many fiction books in India, there is relatively less information on the business practices and ethics in India in the last few decades , working conditions. The book Madras Merchants Life and times by K.R.N Menon is a reflection of indian businesses in the post independence period. K.R.N Menon was born in a relatively privileged family with his father having a flourishing accounting practice in Ceylon now Sri Lanka. After studying for some time in Madras he managed to persuade his father to send him to study at Christchurch College in Oxford, England.
However discrimination against those who are not locals, especially Indians increased in Sri lanka after the british left the country, and his father was forced to sell his accounting practice at a relatively young age of 53 and return to India, to settle in Bangalore. K.R.N.Menon also returned to India, and got a job in Best & Co, which ran an agency business representing many foreign and indian companies through out the country, as it had a large number of branch offices. The company was selling a wide range of products ranging from pharmaceuticals to industrial products like roofing. He worked mainly in sales, and was also responsible for ensuring that all the customers paid for items that they had ordered.
With hard work and relatively privileged background K.R.N Menon got promoted rapidly in the hierarchy at Best & Co and became a director at the relatively young age of 35. However in the 1970’s corruption levels in India increased rapidly, and also the internal politics in Best & Co. One day after returning from leave, K.R.N. Menon found that he had been stripped of all responsibilities except personnel. So after some time, he decided to resign from his job at the young age of 41 and start his own management consultancy Aarjay management pvt ltd.

K.R.N.Menon’s wife Jaya was from the Travancore royal family, and owned a fairly large amount of property in Madras. So after he resigned from the job, K.R.N.Menon decided to develop the property, so that his family would have a passive source of income. It again highlight the problems of those who do not have a government job with pension, after they retire, they should have some source of passive income, in case they are not able to get any work .

Against all odds is the story of Ram Chugh who overcame all odds to become a professor at State University of New York. His family was fairly wealthy before the partitition and independence of India, owning a lot of property, However after independence of India all the property in Pakistan, was lost and his family was not very well off. As his elder brothers were studying, Ram Chugh was given the work of looking after his strict aged grandfather and also completely his studies. Despite the responsibility of looking after his grandfather he ranked well in his high school exams.
Since his father could afford to educate Ram Chugh, his father told him to join indian air force, which would educate him and also pay all expenses. However he was not aware that after being trained by the indian air force, he would be expected to serve for 38 years, as part of the contract, as his english was poor and he did not read the papers carefully while taking admission. Later as he signed up as a fitter armourer in the air force, he became aware of the fact that he was contractually bound to do the work for at least thirty eight years
The air force like other organizations distinguished between employees based on their education level and airmen were considered to be inferior to officers, and expected to salute them everytime they interacted. If they did not follow the rules, the airmen were disciplined and punished in a very harsh manner. Ram Chugh found it very humiliating and started desperately looking for a way out.
One option which he considered was studying engineering through correspondence and getting an AMIE degree. However he found studying engineering remotely very difficult due to which he gave up. Realizing that studying engineering for a AMIE degree was difficult, Ram Chugh decided to opt for a BA degree in economics. Looking at the excellent academic record the University vice Chancellor Rangnekar wrote to the commanding officer of the squadron where Ram Chugh was serving and requested that he be discharged so that he could do his Ph.D at Punjab University. So due to the help of the Punjab University vice chancellor Rangnekar, Ram Chugh managed to get a honorable discharge from the Indian Air Force and could join Punjab University, Later he shifted to Kurukshetra University and then applied and got a scholarship to a US University.
The book is an interesting read because it highlights how hard a person has to work to get good grades, while others are enjoying and how complex and difficult it is to study and understand engineering. While the progress of Gujarat in the last decade has been well documented in the media, less in known about his working style and how he managed to have a tight grip on the state when he ruled it. Unlike most politicians including his successor Anandiben Patel in Gujarat, who have accusations of nepotism against them, one of the most admired qualities of Narendra Modi, remains on how he did not let his family benefit from the great powers he had. In the 2014 general elections, most people were tired of the congress government due to the high levels of corruption, lack of jobs and opportunities. Realizing that people were eager for change, the BJP launched a very high profile and aggressive campaign , asking the indian electorate to vote for BJP and Narendra Modi in particular who was the prime ministerial candidate. There were few other leaders in India who had been promoted extensively like Narendra Modi, so BJP was able to win the elections with a comfortable majority and Narendra Modi became the prime minister.

There are relatively few well written books on India which are not romances and honestly write about Indian conditions , so the Vish Puri detective series by Tarquin Hall are a good read. The case of the missing servant by Tarquin Hall is another one of the several detective novels on the adventures of Vish(Vishwas) Puri, former military intelligence, India’s most private investigator, who claims to be featured on the cover of India Today.
Like all other novels this novel combines the case of the missing servant, with other activities, matrimonial investigations and an attempted murder attempt on the detective. A jaipur lawyer Abhay Kasliwal is an activist filing PILs to reform the system, finds that a FIR has been filed against him because one of the servants in his house Mary Murmu has gone missing and wanted the detective to prove that he is innocent. The lawyer and his family have little information on the servant who went missing so that the detective can find out what actually happened to her.
An investigation proves that an unclaimed body of a young woman was found around the same time that Mary Murmu went missing and the police claim that it belongs to Mary Murmu to arrest Abhay Kasliwal for murdering his servant. When Vish Puri visits the room of the missing servant, he finds smooth round stones with high levels of uranium in them and realizes that Mary Murmu was from Jharkand area ,where uranium is mined. He also uses his operative Facecream to pose as a servant and finds that a bleeding Mary Murmu was taken away from the house by the ex driver .
During investigation, he finds that the staff are claiming that good looking attractive Mary Murmu was having many “boyfriends”. The driver claims that the injured Mary Murmu was taken to a nursing home. The detective then traces mary murmu to her home in Jharkand . He finds out that she had an affair with the son of Abhay Kasliwal, bobby and was pregnant. However Bobby had gone abroad soon after the affair. When the pregnant servant Mary approached Bobby’s mother, she refused to help and the servant tried to commit suicide. She was saved and to prevent further problems, sent back to her home in Jharkand to live with her family.
Like all books, this is an entertaining read and provides a glimpse of the rampant corruption in the indian judicial system, with judges abusing their powers to make money , which is invested in property . Outlook magazine is one of the few media newspapers, magazines which has honest and correct information on indian intelligence agencies like R&AW, NTRO, hence it is always interesting to know more about the editor in chief of outlook the late Vinod Mehta. In his book Lucknow boy, he mentioned that he had written a book on the film actress Meena Kumari, and since the book was available, this a review of the book which was first published in 1972 shortly after the death of the actress.
Meena Kumari was one of the most famous film actresses in India immediately after independence and is widely remembered for her tragic roles in a large number of movies. However little is known about her personal life.
The daughter of a migrant from Pakistan, Ali Bux and Iqbal Begum, Meena Kumari, whose original name was Mahjabeen, was born in 1932 in Mumbai, the second among three sisters. She started working in films at a young age of 4 as a child actress, as her family was short of funds and continued to act as a heroine after she became an adult. She acted in a large number of films, 77 films, like Baiju Bawra, Phool aur Pathar, sahib bibi or Ghulam and her last film was Pakeezah.
She was married to the writer, director, producer Kamal Amrohi, who was older to her and a Shia muslim, unlike Meena Kumari who was a Sunni. Initially the marriage was happy, however after a decade, due to ego and other problems they started living separately. They also did not have any children together. According to the book, she was rumored to have affairs with others like the actor Dharmender who she groomed, Gulzar. After her separation, she allegedly started drinking heavily, which adversely affected her health, especially the liver. Though she went to England for treatment, after her return to India, she did not follow the advice of doctors and continued her erratic schedule which adversely affected her life.
After the age of 35, the roles available to Meena Kumari were limited to elder sister, mother,widow, however she completed her last film Pakeezah with her husband Kamal Amrohi , which was released in 1972. Her liver related illness worsened and she died on 31 March 1972, in Mumbai just a few months short of her 40th birthday.
The book on Meena Kumari was probably commissioned by Jaico Publishing to take advantage of the popularity of the actress and her movies at the time of her death. Unlike most conventional autobiographies, it is divided into two different parts one a conventional autobiography stating the facts of her life and the second part about how vinod mehta tried to collect information about her, the difficulty in getting any details from her relatives and others who exploited her financially leaving her with very little money. He also mentions that the actress left her diaries for the writer Gulzar, probably because he was kind to her, which angered her husband Kamal Amrohi as they had confidential information.
This book is also a reflection of indian society, where anyone who has money like Meena Kumari is cheated, exploited by relatives and “friends” especially if the person is kind. Unlike most biographies on famous persons, where the person is mentioned by his or her name , vinod mehta mentions her as “my heroine” repeatedly. An interesting book to read for those who wish to understand the hindi film industry/bollywood and hindi movies in the post independence era.

The Bombay Natural History Society which was associated with bird watcher Salim Ali is one of the most high profile organizations and has released a number of books on the flora and fauna of India.
Most people who have grown up or are living in the coastal areas of the country are familiar with the different seashells, however identifying or finding the scientific names of these sea shells can be difficult. The Book of Indian Sea Shells is one of the books published by Bombay Natural history society in 1998, which contains fairly comprehensive information of the shells available in coastal area with 13 different plates having color photos of the different shells available. While some shells have commercial value like cowrie shells, others are available on beachsides and in homes/gardens which are over run by snails
For each shell listed, in addition to the latin name, description, colour, habitat, habits, distribution, availability is also listed. However any information about the commercial value and application, uses of these shells would be appreciated. At the first glance readers may think that this a romance, however The case of the Love Commandos by Tarquin Hall is more of a book on casteism, genetic research in India, and caste politics. The love commandos are a group of vigilantes who help make intercaste marriage possible. Laxmi or Facecream, the nepalese operative of the detective Vish Puri is a member of the vigilante group. In Uttar Pradesh they are trying to help a dalit boy named Ram get married to a Thakur girl Tulsi Mishra, whose father Vishnu Mishra opposes the affair, and has kept her in captivity. She allowed to leave home only for answering her exams, and the love commandos use the opportunity to help her escape. However at around the same time, Ram who was kept in a safe house of the Love commandos also disappears.
The detective Vish Puri (ex military intelligence) is asked to help Facecream locate the missing Ram, which he agrees out of loyalty to his staff. In the process he also finds out that his arch rival detective Hari Kumar, ex R&AW is also working on the same task, and they take a sadistic pleasure in exposing each other to the media. Though Vish Puri featured on the cover of India today, his rival Hari Kumar has few scruples , and his clientele consists of the upper classes of Delhi who are more comfortable with Hari Kumar.
To add to the mystery the mother of Ram, a midwife in the village of Govind is found dead near a canal with a smiley mark on her hand. It is also found that Ram who is a college student appears to have got a lot of money in the last few months, enabling him to build a better house for his parents, get a TV. Soon afterward the body has been found, Vishnu Mishra reaches the village of Govind, just as Vish Puri is leaving , and is promptly arrested by the police inspector as a prime accused in the murder.
However Vish Puri thinks that Vishnu Mishra has been framed and his arch rival Dr Bal Pandey the Brahmin leader, in the state may be responsible for the framing. The two men were rivals for a long time, with Mishra allegedly seducing the mistress of Dr Bal pandey, who wowed revenge. The mistress had since disappeared, however the rivalry remained, and the current chief of police in the state was a brahmin who was prompt in arresting the thakur Mishra
Vish Puri’s operative Facecream then spends some time in the village, disguised as a teacher, and finds that many Dalit women in the village are asking for medicine for scars after they gave blood. She later finds that some time ago, an organization named as ICMB, Institute of cellular and molecular biology in Agra had taken samples from the poor Dalit villagers, paying them Rs 100 for the sample. More research helps him find that ICMB is a well funded organization located in the SEZ near Agra and is involved in the latest genetic reasearch, trying to find genome combination which increase the immunity to various diseases.

However there are relatively few books and accurate information available on the different types of plants which are available in India and grown in the tropical areas of India. Most of the books available in book stores are written by english authors about plants which grow in temperate climate. The book Medicinal plants in your own yard by Dr. M Vasundhara, Dr Vasundhara Bhupathi and Dr N.S. Leela is one of few well written indian books available on plants which are grown in India, and their medicinal properties.
For those who did not study botany professionally, yet are interested in gardening, this is an excellent book for reference and to identify the various plants which are available. The latin name of each plant is provided along with the name of the plant in Marathi, Hindi, Sanskrit, Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada. Compared to other books on Indian plants which are available, a major advantage of the book is that photos are included for almost every plant which has been described. Most of the other books only contain sketches of the flowers and plants, which are not easy to identify
Most of the plants listed in the book are relatively easy to identify or find like coriander, coleus, aloe vera, curry leaf, garden mint, holy basil(tulsi), indian spinach , hibiscus, rose, valerian , white headed nettle, though some are not easily found like the winter cherry.
Though the book is relatively expensive at Rs 225 and difficult to find, it is a good reference book for amateur gardeners looking for additional information and unable to get much help on plants growing locally.
