Book review: Between Life and Living 0

While most people are lucky enough to live in the same city, town or state in which they are born for most of their lives, some people live in multiple states for various reasons like education, job, better business opportunities or because their parents are migrants to the state. The migrants lead a difficult life and are often cheated and exploited.
While most indian authors are focusing on romance books, there are few books on the lives of ordinary middle class indians, especially those who are living in various cities and states for educational and other reasons.
The book covers the life of students in a village school, Rohan, Sohan, Alok and Vinay. While Rohan and Sohan move to delhi for higher education, Vinay remains in the village with his family. There he finds himself involved in a property dispute, with family members getting arrested and having to pay bribes. Alok remained his hometown to take care of his parents
In Delhi, Sohan becomes infatuated with a young woman and cannot focus on his studies. However, the relationship/infatuation is one sided, and he wastes his time and energy thinking of the woman he is infatuated with, how to lure her.
His friends have also noted his infatuated and how he is wasting time, efforts on wooing her, instead of focussing on his career. Sohan’s infatuation is typical of young people, especially from small towns and villages who may get infatuated with good looking women, waste their time wooing them, when the women may be just playing with their suitors, often exploiting them. these women often persuade the men infatuated with them to purchase many expensive items like mobile phones and luxury items.
While initially the young woman appeared interested, so that she could exploit him to the maximum extent possible. Later she dumped him and this adversely affected sohan, who did not even answer his father’s phone calls.

Sohan’s father contacted his friend rohan, to find out what happened. When sohan’s father discovered the infatuation, he ordered sohan to leave the city immediately within a fortnight. sohan decides to go back to his village where he starts a tuition centre for students. While initially only a few students were interested, later, the number of students increased gradually since Sohan was a patient teacher.

He also gets married to Anjali, who tries to keep him happy, though he is always finding fault in her. To understand his behavior with his wife sohan consults his friend vivek, who resides in the vicinity and is considered an expert in relationships. His friend explains that only focusing on the negative aspects of a person does not help, sohan should also consider the positive features, that anjali is good cook.
anjali then leaves for her maternal home for a week, her friend notices that her unhappiness has adversely affected her appearance. After she comes back she notices a significant change in sohan which she cannot understand.

The book then takes a twenty year leap as the perspectives of the main protagonists change as they gain more experience. Though personal and professional experience is not valued especially in the indian internet sector, most people learn from their experience and are less likely to repeat the same mistakes as they grow older. While internet companies and government agencies are quick to give greedy young frauds credit and salaries for work they do not do, money they do not spend, they do not realize that young people do not have adequate experience, their judgement of people is not good. Young people often let their prejudices and greed affect their decision making, harming and causing great pain to others

The book also has an insight into the difference between the rich and the middle class, how the middle-class people are easily affected by advertising and squander their money. In contrast the rich travel in expensive cars, do not come across beggars and do not waste their money giving them alms. The author comments that though middle-class people are handling all the work, for functioning of various utilities, they rarely get the recognition they deserve.

Interesting book on the life of people living in small towns, villages, students who move to metro cities for higher education, differences in mindset between the middle class and rich in india
