The toddy tapper has to get permission from the landlord who actually owns the coconut tree and pay the landlord an annual fee for the same.
Due to the risk involved in climbing up the coconut tree, many children of the toddy tapper studied in colleges and got their degrees. However they continued to face discrimination due to the culture in goa where weaker people are ruthlessly suppressed. For example the academic records of Jeron the son of a toddy tapper were not retained, while the academic records of higher caste children were retained. So if Jeron, a lawyer stopped working, the local intelligence and security agencies would defame the person as a fool, as his academic records were erased.
In another case, Salvador the son of a toddy tapper was made the manager in firm by the owner who was impressed by his hard work and work ethic. However he found it difficult to function because the higher caste people in the office, who were reporting to him felt humiliated by his promotion and refused to cooperate, causing losses to the firm where he worked. The owner of the firm was forced to sack him from his post to find out the cause of the problem, though it was resolved later.

Though written in 1935, the book Untouchable could be a true picture of India a century later, as casteism still flourishes, though not so openly. The idealism of the independence era has died, and the mindset of the powerful Brahmin officials in India today remains similar to the powerful brahmins in India 80 years ago. The book is about a day of the life of Bakha, a 18 year old sweeper. He prefers to work with the british as they treat him as a human being, unlike the upper caste Indians who treat him like an animal, and feel polluted by his touch. He is expected to warn people that he is coming so that they do not touch him by mistake and get polluted. It also shows the hypocrisy of brahmins priests, who lust after his good looking sister sohini, yet shout polluted after they have molested her . The open discrimination which he faces, continues even in India today as education and technology has not changed the mindset of the all powerful brahmin officials. It describes his interaction with the salvation army padre who does not discriminate against the untouchable people. In the final section of the book, a meeting of Mahatma Gandhi has been described where he attempts to change the mindset of people against casteism, saying that people should be not discriminated according to their profession or caste.
