The book is the autobiographical story of a Madhwa brahmin woman Krishnaa born in 1904, written by her grand daughters Vidya and Radhika, tracing her life from marriage to death, in her own words. The story is narrated by Krishnaa. Krishnaa is youngest of eight children and her family is in charge of Gundappa Choultry serving free food to people. Though she is not fair complexioned, she is married to the good looking already married Raghavendra who is cooking and selling food in Kumbakonam at the time of the marriage.
Though Krishnaa has cordial relations with Raghavendra’s first wife Padmavati, krishnaa is not able to find out the reasons for the discord. After a few years Padmavati falls ill and dies. Over a period of time, due to hard work and right business decisions, Raghavendra becomes extremely wealthy the leading businessman in the town owning a large number of shops, agencies, land and other assets. Krishnaa as his wife is also gifted jewelry, leads a very luxurious life, as their family purchases a large house at No.8 West Iyen Street. She is able to help all her relatives including sisters and neighbours financially and otherwise sending food.
Krishnaa also has a large number of children mostly boys with only two daughters Janaki and Vijayulu, with her eldest son Kittu assisting his father.
However over a period of time, after the death of her husband and passage of time in 1990, their business flounders, the family sells the business and most family members take up a job. Though she is not directly involved in the operation of the business, Krishnaa believes that the family is paying for the sins committed, like Raghavendra treating his first wife Padmavati badly. Also her husband Raghavendra became very wealthy by purchasing land and businesses at a low price, when the business owner was in distress, in a way taking advantage of the sorrow of others and so his family is paying the price.
The book shows that though a business can make a family very wealthy it is not a stable source of income and the money can disappear due to changing business conditions. Krishnaa was not from a wealthy family, yet her husband became so wealthy that all the shopkeepers came to her house for showing sarees available. However towards the end of her life, her family lost most of their wealth and her expensive jewelry was sold by her sons to cover business expenses. The family which was living together as a joint family, in 8 West Iyen Street also separates as the differences increase when the businesses are making losses.

Kairos is a collection of 56 short poems expressing the poet Neha’s view on a variety of topics ranging from Schizophrenia (hearing voices) to being Ladylike , Chivalrous and Chauvinistic. The third poem Anymore on drinking is relevant to young people who are drinking a lot of beer, whisky, scotch, mainly due to peer pressure, without understanding the adverse effects of alcohol on their health. While some are fortunate enough to realize the dangers and stop drinking, many realize too late, when their health has already been affected .

As his elder brothers were studying, Ram Chugh was given the work of looking after his strict aged grandfather and also completely his studies. Despite the responsibility of looking after his grandfather he ranked well in his high school exams.
Since his father could afford to educate Ram Chugh, his father told him to join indian air force, which would educate him and also pay all expenses. However he was not aware that after being trained by the indian air force, he would be expected to serve for 38 years, as part of the contract, as his english was poor and he did not read the papers carefully while taking admission. Later as he signed up as a fitter armourer in the air force, he became aware of the fact that he was contractually bound to do the work for at least thirty eight years
The air force like other organizations distinguished between employees based on their education level and airmen were considered to be inferior to officers, and expected to salute them everytime they interacted. If they did not follow the rules, the airmen were disciplined and punished in a very harsh manner. Ram Chugh found it very humiliating and started desperately looking for a way out.
One option which he considered was studying engineering through correspondence and getting an AMIE degree. However he found studying engineering remotely very difficult due to which he gave up. So due to the help of the Punjab University vice chancellor Rangnekar, Ram Chugh managed to get a honorable discharge from the Indian Air Force and could join Punjab University, Later he shifted to Kurukshetra University and then applied and got a scholarship to a US University.
The book is an interesting read because it highlights how hard a person has to work to get good grades, while others are enjoying and how complex and difficult it is to study and understand engineering. After the death of his father, his brother in law, finds out that he and his sister are not biologically related. His mother tells him and he was adopted from a sardarni who could not take care of him. He spends a lot of time to trace the sardarni, visiting amritsar.
When he finds the sardarni, she tells him the true story of his birth, that he was the illegimate son of young woman as a result of an affair with a history student. His real mother is now married to a powerful cabinet minister and her other sons are often in trouble with the law. he realizes that a persons values depend on the family that has bought him up, not the biological parent and does not try to trace his father.
In both the stories the protagonist do the right thing and help the person who has got an unfair deal. However in the cruel criminal indian sector only frauds and cheaters flourish, protected and rewarded allegedly by criminal tata, google, officials.

The non fiction book “What Young India Wants” is a collection of essays on different topics. Some of the essays are very generic, but some highlight issues which are not featured in the mainstream media. One is how young India wants to be spoonfed , and does not value hard work. This has been my personal experience with many “young” and often mediocre freelancers, who want everything to be taught to them,and are unwilling to spend any time and money to experiment and learn the hard way.
