Their income will also depend on the weather, with income reducing during the monsoon when the toddy will get diluted due to the rain. The toddy tapper has to get permission from the landlord who actually owns the coconut tree and pay the landlord an annual fee for the same.
Due to the risk involved in climbing up the coconut tree, many children of the toddy tapper studied in colleges and got their degrees. However they continued to face discrimination due to the culture in goa where weaker people are ruthlessly suppressed. For example the academic records of Jeron the son of a toddy tapper were not retained, while the academic records of higher caste children were retained. So if Jeron, a lawyer stopped working, the local intelligence and security agencies would defame the person as a fool, as his academic records were erased.
