There are relatively few well written books on India which are not romances and honestly write about Indian conditions , so the Vish Puri detective series by Tarquin Hall are a good read. The case of the missing servant by Tarquin Hall is another one of the several detective novels on the adventures of Vish(Vishwas) Puri, former military intelligence, India’s most private investigator, who claims to be featured on the cover of India Today.
Like all other novels this novel combines the case of the missing servant, with other activities, matrimonial investigations and an attempted murder attempt on the detective. A jaipur lawyer Abhay Kasliwal is an activist filing PILs to reform the system, finds that a FIR has been filed against him because one of the servants in his house Mary Murmu has gone missing and wanted the detective to prove that he is innocent. The lawyer and his family have little information on the servant who went missing so that the detective can find out what actually happened to her.
An investigation proves that an unclaimed body of a young woman was found around the same time that Mary Murmu went missing and the police claim that it belongs to Mary Murmu to arrest Abhay Kasliwal for murdering his servant. When Vish Puri visits the room of the missing servant, he finds smooth round stones with high levels of uranium in them and realizes that Mary Murmu was from Jharkand area ,where uranium is mined. He also uses his operative Facecream to pose as a servant and finds that a bleeding Mary Murmu was taken away from the house by the ex driver .
During investigation, he finds that the staff are claiming that good looking attractive Mary Murmu was having many “boyfriends”. The driver claims that the injured Mary Murmu was taken to a nursing home. The detective then traces mary murmu to her home in Jharkand . He finds out that she had an affair with the son of Abhay Kasliwal, bobby and was pregnant. However Bobby had gone abroad soon after the affair. When the pregnant servant Mary approached Bobby’s mother, she refused to help and the servant tried to commit suicide. She was saved and to prevent further problems, sent back to her home in Jharkand to live with her family.
Like all books, this is an entertaining read and provides a glimpse of the rampant corruption in the indian judicial system, with judges abusing their powers to make money , which is invested in property . At the first glance readers may think that this a romance, however The case of the Love Commandos by Tarquin Hall is more of a book on casteism, genetic research in India, and caste politics. The love commandos are a group of vigilantes who help make intercaste marriage possible. Laxmi or Facecream, the nepalese operative of the detective Vish Puri is a member of the vigilante group. In Uttar Pradesh they are trying to help a dalit boy named Ram get married to a Thakur girl Tulsi Mishra, whose father Vishnu Mishra opposes the affair, and has kept her in captivity. She allowed to leave home only for answering her exams, and the love commandos use the opportunity to help her escape. However at around the same time, Ram who was kept in a safe house of the Love commandos also disappears.
The detective Vish Puri (ex military intelligence) is asked to help Facecream locate the missing Ram, which he agrees out of loyalty to his staff. In the process he also finds out that his arch rival detective Hari Kumar, ex R&AW is also working on the same task, and they take a sadistic pleasure in exposing each other to the media. Though Vish Puri featured on the cover of India today, his rival Hari Kumar has few scruples , and his clientele consists of the upper classes of Delhi who are more comfortable with Hari Kumar.
To add to the mystery the mother of Ram, a midwife in the village of Govind is found dead near a canal with a smiley mark on her hand. It is also found that Ram who is a college student appears to have got a lot of money in the last few months, enabling him to build a better house for his parents, get a TV. Soon afterward the body has been found, Vishnu Mishra reaches the village of Govind, just as Vish Puri is leaving , and is promptly arrested by the police inspector as a prime accused in the murder.
However Vish Puri thinks that Vishnu Mishra has been framed and his arch rival Dr Bal Pandey the Brahmin leader, in the state may be responsible for the framing. The two men were rivals for a long time, with Mishra allegedly seducing the mistress of Dr Bal pandey, who wowed revenge. The mistress had since disappeared, however the rivalry remained, and the current chief of police in the state was a brahmin who was prompt in arresting the thakur Mishra
Vish Puri’s operative Facecream then spends some time in the village, disguised as a teacher, and finds that many Dalit women in the village are asking for medicine for scars after they gave blood. She later finds that some time ago, an organization named as ICMB, Institute of cellular and molecular biology in Agra had taken samples from the poor Dalit villagers, paying them Rs 100 for the sample. More research helps him find that ICMB is a well funded organization located in the SEZ near Agra and is involved in the latest genetic reasearch, trying to find genome combination which increase the immunity to various diseases.
When making a visit to ICMB, he meets the head of the organization Dr Sengupta who explains that though many indians, especially Brahmins claim to be directly descended from an aryan sect to justify the superiority of a caste, blood samples and genetic research proves that actually he has mixed blood. Vish Puri also finds out that a senior scientist in ICMB, Dr Anju Basu had also died in what the police claim to be a car accident, her car fell off the bridge at early in the morning . However investigation proved that it was a murder, a truck or a vehicle was used to push the car off, so that it appeared to be an accident.
After checking the apartment where Dr Anju Basu was living, Vish Puri finds out that she was considering marriage and was meeting a number of young men. She was going to get married to a young man, and just before her death, she had dinner with her fiancee. After speaking to the fiancee, he finds that a young man who is very similar to the dalit youth Ram in appearance was spotted with Dr Anju Basu just befor she met her fiancee.
later Ram tries to meet Tulsi only to be abducted and taken to the residence of the dalit chief minister of the state Baba Dhobhi, who is considering a political alliance with Dr Bal Pandey. It is revealed that Ram had got a lot of money from Dr Anju Basu, because his genomes contained some valuable features which were not commonly found. To do further research ICMB had taken blood samples from other villagers of Govind. It was found that the blood samples of Ram did not match his official father who was living with his mother. However it was revealed that his paternal features matched some Brahmin blood genomes.
Ram also reveals that his mother worked in Lucknow general hospital just before he was born, and though his mother was sacked, she continued to receive her salary. Due to reservation,the chief minister Baba Dhobi was the administrator of the hospital and ensured that her name remained on the payroll after she was dismissed, so that she continued to get a salary as he tried to help her as a fellow dalit. There was some controversy regarding rape, and Dr Bal pandey was allegedly involved. since it was the word of a dalit midwife against the Brahmin doctor, nothing could be proved, though Ram’s mother could no longer continue in the hospital.
Now that the valuable genome was discovered the details could be exposed, which could affect the political career of the brahmin leader Dr.Bal Pandey and he had allegedly arranged for the killing of Ram’s mother so that his secret would not be revealed.In the novel the thakur beauty Tulsi Mishra finally married the dalit Ram, and live under CBI protection due to the controversial case.

His mother tells him and he was adopted from a sardarni who could not take care of him. He spends a lot of time to trace the sardarni, visiting amritsar.
When he finds the sardarni, she tells him the true story of his birth, that he was the illegimate son of young woman as a result of an affair with a history student. His real mother is now married to a powerful cabinet minister and her other sons are often in trouble with the law. he realizes that a persons values depend on the family that has bought him up, not the biological parent and does not try to trace his father.
In both the stories the protagonist do the right thing and help the person who has got an unfair deal. However in the cruel criminal indian sector only frauds and cheaters flourish, protected and rewarded allegedly by criminal tata, google, officials.

Some of the most lucrative jobs available in both cities and small towns for young people in India at present are available are at call centres, yet there is relatively little information available for people in conventional professions, except the occassional news of the murder of a call centre employee after returning from work. The book ” Call centre An inside story by Vikrant Shukla ” gives a glimpse of the life of an entry level call center employee.
The main protagonist Shiv has got a law degree in Kanpur,and is working as an assistant to a senior advocate Balram Rastogi. He soon realizes that he will not make any money soon, and it is difficult to become a successful lawyer if a person does not have any relative already working as a lawyer. So he decides to look for other options to make a reasonable amount of money and his brother who is working in Pune suggested that he try working in a call center.
So along with his middle class mother, Shiv makes a trip to Pune to try his luck at the call centers. He initially goes for walk in interviews which are advertised in Ascent section of times of india, and so when referred to by a neighbour, yet he has no luck because of his voice which has a strong MTI or mother tongue influence. So he is forced to go for professional training at a consultancy firm named Crossway which has a 15 day course in which the students are taught how to neutralize their indian accent and are coached specifically for a call center position.
At crossway he is fortunate that the coach abbas provides comprehensive training so that he is accepted at a call center named Corporate Clients which deals with american clients like Circular wireless. His colleagues who he is also friendly with include Alex, Sumit and Tanya. After working at the call center for some time, Sumit and Tanya take a loan from IEIE bank to purchase a new car. Some time later Tanya takes leave of 10 days to go to Nagpur for a medical emergency in her family, only to disappear and is never traced despite the best effort of sumit, her boyfriend.
Later at a blood donation camp, the company finds that sumit who was dating tanya was HIV positive. After sumit recovers from the shock, sumit resigns and decides to relocate to goa, without repaying the loan he had taken from IEIE bank.The good natured Keralite Alex who had stood guarantor for sumit and tanya is forced to repay the loan they had taken, with emis from his salary, though tanya alone had possession with the car. They later find out that tanya had duped them, her landlord in Pune knew her as Shivani.
Alex who was also studying for his MBA finds a better job after completing his MBA, However shiv finds that prospects are limited outside the call center industry , continues, and is promoted to the designation of team leader after some time. Though the salary is attractive the prospects at the call center remain limited and the lifestyle which forced people to work at night, can take a toll on the persons health. An interesting and honest glimpse into the life of a person working in a call centre, the qualification, training required and lifestyle.

Though written in 1935, the book Untouchable could be a true picture of India a century later, as casteism still flourishes, though not so openly. The idealism of the independence era has died, and the mindset of the powerful Brahmin officials in India today remains similar to the powerful brahmins in India 80 years ago. The book is about a day of the life of Bakha, a 18 year old sweeper. He prefers to work with the british as they treat him as a human being, unlike the upper caste Indians who treat him like an animal, and feel polluted by his touch. He is expected to warn people that he is coming so that they do not touch him by mistake and get polluted. It also shows the hypocrisy of brahmins priests, who lust after his good looking sister sohini, yet shout polluted after they have molested her . The open discrimination which he faces, continues even in India today as education and technology has not changed the mindset of the all powerful brahmin officials. It describes his interaction with the salvation army padre who does not discriminate against the untouchable people. In the final section of the book, a meeting of Mahatma Gandhi has been described where he attempts to change the mindset of people against casteism, saying that people should be not discriminated according to their profession or caste.

As the top selling author for pulp fiction in India, books by Chetan Bhagat are widely publicized in the media before being released. “Half Girlfriend” is the latest book from Chetan Bhagat and is the story of a student from Dumraon in Bihar, Madhav and the rich girl from a Delhi business family Riya Somani he meets in St Stephens college while trying to get admission under the sports quota. As Madhav is a state level basketball player he easily manages to get admission though he is not very proficient in English. After getting admission to St Stephen’s college they keep each other company despite their very different background.
After a disagreement , Riya Somani gets married to a rich businessman from London Rohan who has the approval of her family. After graduation Madhav does not take up a well paying job offer from a foreign bank, instead opting to return to his native place Dumraon in Bihar to help his mother from the erstwhile royal family in running the village school. As the school does not get any grant from the government it is difficult to provide good facilities. To get a grant from the Microsoft foundation madhav joins an english course in Patna, and he again meets Riya who has taken up a job with a multinational. Her extremely wealthy husband did not treat her properly so Riya got divorced after a one and a half year.
After Madhav introduced Riya somani to his mother, she realize that Madhav’s mother did not like her. So after the Microsoft visit to the school, Riya disappears. Remembering that Riya always dreamt of singing in New York, Madhav plans a trip to New York. He spends time searching for Riya with the little information he has. Finally he managed to find her and like most Chetan Bhagat novels this book too has a happy ending. Easy to read book in simple language targetting the majority of youth in India who are not very fluent in English.

The book Mark of Vishnu by Khushwant Singh is a collection of his most popular short stories. Though Khushwant Singh, who passed away recently was well known as a journalist and novelist, he first made his mark as a short story writer. His short stories are extremely well written and cover different aspect of life in North India. The Mark of Vishnu is the story of the king cobra Kala Nag who was fed with milk daily by Gunga ram. One day he is attacked by school boys who think they have killed the snake and take him to school as a specimen for their biology lab. However, the snake though battered is still alive, and escapes, but not before attacking Gunga Ram.
Another interesting story in the book is about Zora Singh the foreign educated engineer who rose to become the chief engineer through his knowledge, hard work, people skills and by remaining in the good books of the powerful ministers in the government. After retirement, Zora Singh is rewarded with a membership of the Upper house by the minister who trusts him. This story gives a glimpse of life in the country after independence.
A well written collection of short stories, ideal for a bed time read.
